Metal Staff Lockers: How to Choose the Right Option for Your Business

Where do employees leave their jackets, bags, workwear and personal belongings during the working day? Without a designated place, these items often end up on chairs, under desks or on shared shelves.

Metal staff lockers provide individual spaces for organised storage. Choosing a suitable configuration means considering the number of users, the items they need to store, the available room and the locking system.

If you are furnishing an entire changing room or ordering lockers for several departments, planning ahead makes quotations easier to compare and helps avoid discovering missing capacity or access problems after delivery.

Staff lockers or filing cabinets?

Start by defining the purpose. Staff lockers are used to organise clothing and personal belongings, while filing cabinets are selected around document formats, shelving layouts and the volume of material to be stored.

An interior designed for files may not be suitable for a long jacket, a uniform or footwear. Begin with a list of the items employees will leave in their lockers each day.

Explore the Casella cabinet and locker range and request specifications for configurations that match your intended use.

How many compartments do you need?

For a larger order, distinguish between the number of locker units and the number of individual user compartments. A single unit may contain several doors and separate storage spaces.

For example, if 24 employees each need their own space, plan for 24 suitable compartments. The number of units required will depend on the selected configuration.

Shift work does not automatically mean that different employees can share a compartment. If clothing or personal belongings remain after a shift ends, each user may need a permanently assigned space.

Before requesting a quotation, establish:

  • how many people will use the lockers;
  • whether compartments are assigned or used temporarily;
  • whether belongings will be left overnight;
  • how much staff growth you expect;
  • whether visitors or temporary workers need additional compartments.

Choosing the right internal layout

Hanging space for clothing

If employees store jackets, coats or uniforms, check the usable internal height and the provision for hanging clothes. The overall height of a locker unit does not tell you how much space is available inside each compartment.

Consider whether footwear, bags and clothing need separate areas, and request an internal layout before ordering.

Smaller compartments for personal items

Bags, folded clothing and smaller belongings may suit a different arrangement. Check internal width and depth carefully: a photograph of closed locker doors will not show whether an employee’s everyday items will fit.

Z-door configurations

For lockers with Z-shaped doors, check the shape and dimensions of each user’s storage space. Assess the configuration against the items it needs to hold, rather than judging it by the number of doors alone.

Locking systems: what should you check?

The locking system should suit daily use and the person responsible for managing the lockers.

For key-operated models, ask how many keys are supplied, how replacements are obtained and what happens if a key is lost. For electronic systems, confirm how access is assigned, how the lock is powered and the procedure for opening it if a problem occurs.

It is also important to establish who is authorised to access a locker when its assigned user is absent. Agree on the procedure before the lockers enter use.

A lock alone does not establish a particular security rating. If valuable equipment or items with special storage requirements will be kept inside, request information about the specific model and its intended use.

Planning the locker room layout

Measure the wall where the lockers will stand and the space in front of them. Doors need room to open, and users should be able to access their belongings without blocking the main circulation route.

Mark room entrances, windows, radiators, services and existing furniture on your plan. If you need a changing bench, include it before deciding how many locker units the room can accommodate.

Check the delivery route too, including entrances, corridors, stairs and lifts. For larger orders, agree in advance whether the products arrive assembled, who positions them and what preparation is required.

For humid rooms or environments with demanding cleaning routines, confirm that the selected model’s finish and construction are suitable for those conditions.

What affects the cost of metal staff lockers?

The quotation will depend on the configuration, dimensions, number of compartments, internal fittings, locking system and order quantity. Delivery, carrying items into the building and assembly should also be clearly specified.

Cost per user compartment can help compare quotations, provided the models have similar specifications and purposes. A small compartment for a bag serves a different need from a space designed to hold a uniform.

For a larger purchase, request a quotation for the full project, stating both the number of units and the total number of user compartments.

What to include in a business enquiry

Prepare the number of users, a description of the items they will store and the room dimensions. Add your preferred locking system, delivery location and intended installation date.

If you have a floor plan or photographs, include them with your enquiry. They make it easier to assess whether the proposed arrangement suits the installation area.

Frequently asked questions

Should every employee have an assigned locker?

This depends on how the workplace operates. Assigned compartments make sense when employees leave belongings between shifts. Temporary use requires clear rules for access and emptying compartments.

Are all metal lockers suitable for humid environments?

This should not be assumed. Check the material, protective finish and manufacturer’s recommendations for the specific model.

How should I compare two quotations for a larger order?

Compare the total number of user compartments, their internal dimensions, fittings, locks and delivery scope. Also check whether prices include or exclude VAT.
